TOTAL Energies
Reaching Net Zero through reforestation and education centres in PNG.

The Problem
TOTAL Energies embarks on a transformative reforestation program in Papua New Guinea (PNG), targeting key ecosystems like mangroves and highland forests. This initiative is not just about environmental restoration but also about uplifting local economies and fostering sustainable development in the region.
However, the road ahead is fraught with challenges. The company must navigate the delicate balance between genuine environmental impact and avoiding accusations of greenwashing. This requires meticulous planning and transparency in their actions, ensuring that every effort contributes meaningfully to the ecosystem’s health.
Furthermore, gaining buy-in from local tribe leaders and communities is essential. TOTAL Energies must engage in meaningful dialogue, addressing concerns and demonstrating tangible benefits that extend beyond short-term gains. Programs need to be designed to benefit locals economically and environmentally in the long term, fostering self-sufficiency and resilience.
Ultimately, TOTAL Energies’ reforestation efforts in PNG must be a collaborative endeavor, where the company works hand in hand with local communities to create lasting positive change for both the environment and the people who depend on it.

To address these challenges effectively, TOTAL Energies must devise a comprehensive masterplan for each location. This involves strategically planning reforestation, education and economic efforts while simultaneously creating compelling brand stories that resonate with local communities and tourists.
The Development
In a strategic collaboration, TOTAL Energies partnered with Helicopter Creative and PRD Design to spearhead their reforestation initiative in Papua New Guinea (PNG), focusing on two key sites: Koke Hanua and Kuriva. PRD Design, in conjunction with Helicopter Creative, was tasked with designing engaging physical experiences for visitors at these locations, ensuring they resonated with both local communities and tourists.
At Koke Hanua, the concept intertwined a café with a crab hatchery, complemented by mangrove restoration efforts and an educational center. Kuriva, on the other hand, was envisioned as a destination offering picnic areas, river leisure activities, a forest education center, and forestry farming endeavors.
While PRD Design and Helicopter Creative shaped the visitor experiences, TOTAL Energies led the charge in devising comprehensive forestry programs, including restoration and reforestation initiatives. Throughout the process, transparency and community engagement were paramount, with stakeholders kept informed and involved at every stage. By leveraging their combined expertise, TOTAL Energies, Helicopter Creative, and PRD Design aimed to create sustainable solutions that ben
